Hearts are Broken, Not Just Cracked is a collection of poems and short stories fueled by the true-life experiences and exploits of C. David Durkee, whose pen name is Broken Poet; a man who is wandering through middle age trying to find his way, his soul, and maybe some happiness. Most of the poems and short stories are set in Miami, Broken Poet's home for nearly all of his life. A place that has a colorful palette. A place that contrasts sunny beaches, crystal-clear water, and beautiful women with dark and addictively cruel back alleys. The poems and short stories are written in a frank, direct manner that vividly describes both the beauty and wonder of life and miracles, but also sadness, heartbreak, and regret. Poems and stories are written in the style of Charles Bukowski and run the emotional gambit of a father being informed that his daughter had been involved in a terrible car crash, stories of addiction, forgiveness, and mercy, to stories about drug runners in the 1980s. Some of the poems are written lyrically and some have been turned into songs that have been performed from Miami to Australia. Broken Poet's Hearts are Broken, Not Just Cracked can best be described like the city of Miami, a colorful palette.

The new song by Broken Poet is a simple love story. When he fell in love, he simply wanted to write "I love you", in mile high letters, 10,000 feet in the sky. Eventually, he did. In the end, the only thing that disappeared were the words that he wrote her, 10,000 feet in the sky.
